Ce n'est plus vrai depuis les années 90 à part de rares exceptions...

ce n'est pas faux au niveau international mais par rapport à la production française je ne suis pas d'accord du tout mais bon je ne suis pas du tout objectif car je déteste la chanson française. et je ne citerais pas de noms...

Je n'ai pas parlé de la production française car je ne m'en sens pas le droit ayant été très peu attiré par des gens qui chantent dans la langue dans laquelle je parle. Musicalement, j'ai rarement été titillé par des français, ni même dans l'esprit. J'ai toujours été attiré par l'originalité, l'unicité, ce qui fait qu'un artiste n'est comparable à aucun autre et ne semble suivre aucun modèle si ce n'est sa propre 'petite musique". Alors justement, ce que je reproche à la chanson française de façon générale, c'est son manque total d'audace, de désir de s'affranchir des modèles déjà existants. Je n'aime pas la "chanson française" parce que je trouve ça tiède et conventionnel, et surtout, très souvent, prétentieux quand c'est un peu mieux que la moyenne... Mais de temps en temps, je "prête mon oreille" à des voix que je sens un peu "dissonnantes" dans le paysage, même s'ils semblent s'inscrire dans une sorte de tradition (Juliette, Raphaëlle Lannadère, Thomas Fersen...). Et puis, il y a les exceptions comme  Higelin, Les Rita ou même Daho (je concède même Brigitte Fontaine qui m'emmerde souvent mais à qui je reconnais une vraie particularité!)... Après, il y a "les Maîtres", les "Intouchables" (Brel, Brassens, Ferré, Barbara, Piaf, Trenet, Gainsbourg (mais pas Gainsbarre)....) mais là, c'est déjà de l'Histoire...

L'album a l'air de se vendre pas mal car il est en rupture de stock (version cd) sur plusieurs sites Amazon....
L'édition vinyle est superbe, les pochettes sont soignées et magnifiques, le livret aurait juste mérité un traitement un peu plus chic !

Peut-être qu'elle n'en a pas édité assez... Enfin, il se retrouve 4e des meilleures ventes du Royaume-Uni la semaine de sa sortie. C'est officiel.

C'est bien pour cela que j'ai pris les polémiques de ses dernières déclarations avec beaucoup de distance.
Vu l'environnement ambiant, je suis prête à partir sur une autre planète également.

Oui, moi c'est pareil, je n'arrive pas à prendre ça très au sérieux... Pour moi, elle a dit la première grosse connerie de sa carrière, elle ne nous a jamais emmerdés avec ses convictions politiques (qu'elle n'a probablement pas...). Dans ses prises de positions, elle s'est toujours plutôt montrée anti-libérale, alors cette montée de boucliers et ce bashing, je trouve ça plutôt ridicule et exagéré, hors-propos... Je ne comprends pas trop cette apologie de Theresa May (ça me fait même plutôt marrer en réalité), mais je doute que ce soit une façon de nous dire qu'elle est ultra-libérale. Après, je l'imagine assez bien pro-brexit, ce que je peux comprendre aisément, et ce pour des raisons qui n'ont rien à voir avec l'économie ou la politique européenne. Tant qu'elle ne se montre pas raciste, réactionnaire ou anti ceci-celà...

Kate Bush presents her Before the Dawn performances on a lavish new box set that should thrill fans.

A bit of surprising news that nobody ever expected to hear was announced on 21 March 2014. British musical icon Kate Bush, one of the most important and influential artists of the last four decades, was set to embark on her first live performances in 35 years with a residency at the Eventim Apollo Hammersmith in London, beginning in late August of the same year. The announcement understandably shocked and roiled the music industry and jolted her fans into a frenzy of jubilation and anticipation. When tickets went on sale only a week later, they were snapped up in a matter of minutes for all of the announced performances, prompting the addition of more dates. Eventually, she performed the theatrical Before the Dawn concert series, complete with elaborate staging and visuals, 22 times before very fortunate and enthusiastic fans who probably never imagined that they’d be witnessing Kate Bush live on stage. It seemed like such an impossibility for so many years that it was hardly ever contemplated, and yet now it was happening.

The show, captured here, was structured in three parts: an opening section of selected tracks from several of her albums, and two lengthy theatrical suites recorded 20 years apart. Perhaps not surprisingly, given the dramatic change in her voice over the years, no songs from prior to 1985’s Hounds of Love, arguably her greatest album, are included in the set. Bush’s voice, a warbling soprano when she debuted the beguiling classic “Wuthering Heights” in 1978, is now a rich contralto that remains deeply compelling and fully capable of expressing all the emotion and beauty present in many of her most beloved songs.

Ever since the shows wrapped up two years ago, fans fortunate enough to attend have yearned for a recorded souvenir to document their experience, while those of us for whom circumstances didn’t allow to be present have been eager to experience the show via other means. While no DVD is planned for release, Bush has delivered a faithful audio archive of these performances with the new three-CD/four-LP set Before the Dawn, credited to the KT Fellowship as an acknowledgment of the team effort that went into the production. Bush presents her work surprisingly raw and unrefined, unaltered by studio trickery or overdubs. On “Hello Earth”, for example, her voice quavers a bit at times, but she doesn’t touch it up with newly-recorded vocals as most artists do on live albums. As a result, the mix is surprisingly murky, and at times the album feels like a very good audience recording bootleg. It’s an interesting approach for the notoriously perfectionist Bush, but she obviously concluded it was the best way to present an authentic document of her historic run of shows and despite the flaws, it’s hard to argue. This set feels and sounds like you’re in the room as she performs.

Bush and her band open with “Lily”, a soaring rocker from her 1993 release The Red Shoes. She doesn’t hold back on her well-known eccentricities, or one might say wonderful weirdness, as she goes full throttle vocally to the point where at times she’s almost growling. Then comes the shouted warning, “It’s in the trees, it’s coming!”, and she launches into a jaw-dropping take on the harrowing “Hounds of Love”, the title track from her 1985 masterpiece. Bush manages to instill all the anxiety and urgency of the studio version and brings it to vibrant life three decades after it was initially recorded.

Bush then digs deeper into her catalog with a trio of selections, “Joanni”, “Top of the City” and “Never Be Mine”, that make clear her intention is not a simple run-through of her greatest hits, but it is her greatest hit that offers one of the show’s undeniable highlights. It’s a chill-inducing moment when the opening swell of keyboard and the sensual, tribal rhythm of “Running Up That Hill” begins. Bush does her greatest song justice, tackling it with all the searing intensity it requires. The lavish stage production includes a superb team of background singers who deftly manage to recreate the original’s complex and haunting vocal arrangement. There is no shying away from the intricacies of Bush’s recorded work to make it easier to perform live. This is a once in a lifetime musical event and Bush and her team clearly worked very hard to present the best show they possibly could. The opening set closes with a tremendous eight minute “King of the Mountain”, the lead single from Bush’s outstanding 2005 comeback album Aerial.

The most fully successful section of Before the Dawn follows, a theatrical dramatization of the entire Ninth Wave suite that comprises Side Two of Hounds of Love. The song-cycle tells of a woman lost at sea in a life-jacket after a shipwreck, relating the thoughts and dreams that stream through her mind as she drifts in the cold water, fading, hoping for rescue. It’s an ambitious undertaking to recreate the much-loved sequence of some of Bush’s greatest songs, but Bush and her colleagues pull it off with grace, power and painstaking attention to detail. After an extended monologue that helps explain the conceptual framework, the suite opens with the breathtaking “And Dream of Sheep”, performed by Bush on the piano with perhaps her finest vocal on the album. “Under Ice” is appropriately chilling, and the nightmarish “Waking the Witch”, frantic and desperate, is translated live far better than one might have imagined given the song’s intensity and complexity.

Bush’s brothers, Paddy and John Carder, are very much present in the live performance of an album on which they played an integral part. John Carder Bush reprises his riveting narration on a thunderous presentation of the Celtic flavored “Jig of Life”. Bush’s character, still lost at sea and spiraling further into delirium, imagines herself as an old woman who beseeches her younger self to stay alive so that the elder’s part of the lifeline is not cut from the future. The suite’s epic climax, “Hello Earth”, is majestic and thrilling. It’s masterfully arranged and performed, arguably the album’s highest point in an ocean of highs. The finale, “The Morning Fog”, which enacts Bush’s character awakening after being rescued, is as exuberant as one would expect. It concludes The Ninth Wave with a sense of joyous triumph and a deep appreciation for life.

The Ninth Wave alone is worth putting down the money for this collection, but Bush is far from finished. She tackles an even more elaborate piece with A Sky of Honey, a lengthy suite originally released as the entire second half of Aerial. This section may try the patience of some listeners who aren’t necessary die-hard Kate Bush fans. The third act has moments of spellbinding beauty, but also at times, there are lulls that were more effective for audience members who were able to experience the visuals on stage. Some of the interludes and longer pieces don’t translate particularly well to an audio-only presentation. Put more bluntly, portions of the hour-long suite are simply a bit dull.

That said, one cannot help but be impressed by the scope of the production and the power with which it is brought to fruition. Bush’s son, Albert McIntosh, who was an integral part of the show’s creative team, delivers a winsome vocal on “Tawny Moon”, a piece newly written for the show that is sequenced between the suite’s two highlights, “Somewhere in Between”, and the dazzling “Nocturne”. The nearly 10-minute “Aerial” closes the suite with a massive explosion of sound, drama and presumably, for the audience fortunate enough to have the chance to see her, enormous spectacle. It’s an ending worthy of a long and winding journey that is ultimately worth taking despite the occasional drifts into tedium.

Bush wraps up the show and album with a two-song encore: “Among Angels”, the only track present from her 2011 album 50 Words for Snow, and a dynamic performance of the majestic “Cloudbusting”. The audience reaction is ecstatic, and Bush’s gracious appreciation is touching and obviously heartfelt.

Before the Dawn is a bit of an enigma. Yes, it’s magical to hear the reclusive Kate Bush live on stage performing these songs, a musical event that few thought would ever happen. There are genuine moments of grandeur on this album, as befitting a project so elaborate and historic. While the album’s highs are very lofty indeed and The Ninth Wave works beautifully, it’s hard to shake the feeling that the entire experience would have been more profoundly entertaining had Bush refrained from performing the entire Sky of Honey set and instead focused on a couple key tracks as part of a sequence comprising a more varied selection from her catalog. It’s easy to imagine songs like “And So Is Love”, “Pull Out the Pin”, “Under the Ivy”, “This Woman’s Work”, “Love and Anger”, “How to Be Invisible” and “Wild Man” among many other Kate Bush gems performed on stage. The notion of a live performance of her duet “Don’t Give Up” (could she have snagged Peter Gabriel for some of the shows?) is spine-tingling to even contemplate.

Still, given the circumstances, it seems churlish to suggest that Bush should have structured her return after a 35-year absence from the stage in any way other than exactly how she wanted. She does it her way, as she always has, and while one may quibble with a few aspects of the album it’s still a remarkable listen. Perhaps now that Kate Bush has completed work on Before the Dawn—the residency and the deluxe live album—she will move on to new projects. It’s clear that nearly 40 years since her debut single, the creative prowess of one of popular music’s most valuable treasures is undiminished.

Dans quel état étiez-vous à la première ?

Terrorisée ! (Elle rit.) J'étais nerveuse avant de monter sur scène. Je suis une artiste de studio depuis si longtemps... Même si j'ai adoré les shows que j'avais faits il y a longtemps, je me demandais si je serais bonne.Mais la troupe était géniale, et le public nous communiquait une énergie incroyable.


Pourquoi n'avez-vous fait qu'une seule tournée dans votre carrière, en 1979 ?

Ce n'était pas prévu comme ça. J'avais fait ma première tournée après deux albums, et je voulais en faire une deuxième avec de nouvelles chansons. Mais je me suis tellement impliquée dans l'enregistrement de mes albums, dans la réalisation de mes clips... Et puis, j'ai eu un enfant (NDLR : Albert, en 1998).


Ce show va-t-il sortir en DVD ?

Nous l'avons filmé, mais ce n'est pas certain. Parfois, les films ne rendent pas compte de ce que l'on a voulu faire. J'ai découvert Elton John avec son premier disque live, « 17-11-70 ». Je ne le connaissais pas, je devais utiliser mon imagination, et cela me plaisait. Ce qui m'intéresse, c'est que les gens rêvent en écoutant « Before The Dawn ».


Remonterez-vous un jour sur scène ?

Ce n'est pas impossible. Mais avec ce spectacle, je ne sais pas. Ce projet m'a pris près de trois ans, de la préparation du show à la réalisation du disque. J'ai plutôt envie de faire quelque chose de nouveau. J'ai quelques idées, mais peut-être ferai-je une pause avant.


On ne connaît pas votre vie privée...

Car ma vie est formidablement normale. Et je l'aime comme cela. Ma famille en occupe une part très importante, la musique aussi. J'ai mon studio d'enregistrement, un luxe qui me permet d'expérimenter. Je ne vis plus à Londres, mais en périphérie. Les gens ont une image de moi secrète, mais je ne suis pas si mystérieuse. Je suis certainement décalée dans cette époque où les artistes communiquent tant sur eux. Mais je ne me cache pas.


Vous avez chanté une seule fois à Paris, au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, en 1979. Vous vous en souvenez ?

Parfaitement (rires). Tout le monde m'avait averti : « Les Français sont difficiles à satisfaire car ils sont très cultivés. » J'avais peur. Et ce fut fantastique. L'un des meilleurs publics.


Vous allez bientôt avoir quarante ans de carrière...

J'ai commencé en 1978, c'est vrai (elle rit). Je me sens très privilégiée et heureuse d'avoir encore du travail et un public, en allant à mon rythme si lent, sans faire de scène. La musique, les technologies, le monde évoluent si vite ! La vie est un combat et un changement perpétuel. Mais quand comme moi on a la chance d'avoir une vie heureuse, entourée d'une famille aimante et de bons amis, il faut en profiter et la chérir.

Et pour la critique:

Sa voix ensorcelle toujours

Fans de Kate Bush qui n'avaient pu la voir à Londres, les coffrets de « Before The Dawn » vont à la fois vous réconforter et vous rendre inconsolables de l'avoir ratée. Quel bonheur de réentendre sa voix sur scène, toujours aussi émouvante, ensorceleuse, gagnant en puissance ce qu'elle a perdu en aigu. Et quel plaisir de redécouvrir vingt-cinq de ses chansons mises en majesté par une troupe -- baptisée The K Fellowship — de musiciens et choristes hors pair.

Certes, les images manquent parfois pour saisir la subtilité de l'histoire en anglais. Et ce show de deux heures et demie n'est pas un best of absolument parfait — sans « Babooshka » ni « Wuthering Heights », « The Boy With The Child in His Eyes » ou « Wow » — mais il réunit de nombreuses pépites, comme « Top of The City », « And Dream of Sheep » et « Aerial». Construite comme une pièce de théâtre en trois actes, sombre et maritime puis ensoleillée et terrienne, « Before The Dawn » est comme l'oeuvre de Kate Bush — dix albums, dont son chef-d'oeuvre absolu « Hounds of Love », en 1985 — un voyage magique dont on n'est pas près de se lasser.

Par ailleurs, on apprend sur le site de la BBC que "BTD" a été la plus grosse vente de vinyles la semaine dernière. En outre, l'article est assez intéressant: on y apprend que le marché du vinyle se porte plutôt bien comparé à celui du téléchargement légal... (Ce qui n'est pas surprenant finalement: pourquoi payer pour un truc qu'on peut avoir gratos? Alors que "l'objet" vinyle reste un témoignage visuel et sonore de qualité, parfois une "petite oeuvre d'art" et une sorte d'investissement car il existe un marché du vinyle qui peut se révéler assez lucratif... Peut-on imaginer revendre à prix d'or son téléchargement mp3 dans 30 ans alors que la technologie aura tellement évolué qu'il n'y aura plus aucun moyen de le lire. Avec le vinyle, il reste au moins "l'objet".

Le foisonnant univers « bushien »

Déjà, à tout juste 16 ans, l'adolescente se voyait en héroïne préraphaélite. Coiffée d'une chevelure rousse, les yeux fardés de noir, drapée dans de longues robes blanches, elle croise le chemin d'un David Gilmour, leader de Pink Floyd, en pleine écriture du monument « Wish You Where Here ». De leur rencontre naît un premier single, Wuthering Heights, et le premier personnage de l'univers « bushien » : celui inspiré de l'amoureuse tourmentée Catherine Earnshaw, imaginée sous la plume d'Emily Brontë. Plus tard, elle puisera dans les thrillers du septième art : Rendez-vous avec la peur de Jacques Tourneur (pour la chanson Hounds of Love), Les Innocents de Jack Clayton (pour The Infant Kiss), osant même un clin d'oeil à La mariée était en noir de François Truffaut (The Wedding List). Amazone tout de doré vêtue dans le clip Babooshka, danseuse habitée dans Running Up That Hill, jeune homme dans Cloudbusting, Kate Bush n'aura de cesse de faire dialoguer sa musique avec celle de ses écrivains ou cinéastes fétiches.

Ainsi, pour son retour à Londres en 2014, la star choisira de mettre en scène deux de ses albums concepts : « The Ninth Wave », et « A Sky of Honey », face B de ses disques « Hounds of Love » et « Aerial ». Sur scène, elle raconte l'histoire d'une femme perdue dans l'océan, qui finira par retrouver le goût des belles soirées d'été. Je ne le connaissais pas, je devais utiliser mon imagination, et cela me plaisait. Ce qui m'intéresse, c'est que les gens rêvent en écoutant « Before The Dawn ».

Ce n'est pas impossible. Mais avec ce spectacle, je ne sais pas. Ce projet m'a pris près de trois ans, de la préparation du show à la réalisation du disque. J'ai plutôt envie de faire quelque chose de nouveau. J'ai quelques idées, mais peut-être ferai-je une pause avant.

Quelque chose de nouveau... Elle ferait un truc tout simple du type piano-voix avec peut-être juste quelques cordes et nous serions ravis...
Le seul truc est que beaucoup d'autres l'ont fait et ce type de prestation ne répondrait pas à son "besoin" de faire quelque chose d'"exceptionnel"...

Vous avez chanté une seule fois à Paris, au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, en 1979. Vous vous en souvenez ?

Parfaitement (rires). Tout le monde m'avait averti : «]Les Français sont difficiles à satisfaire car ils sont très cultivés. » J'avais peur. Et ce fut fantastique. L'un des meilleurs publics.

Par ailleurs, on apprend sur le site de la BBC que "BTD" a été la plus grosse vente de vinyles la semaine dernière. En outre, l'article est assez intéressant: on y apprend que le marché du vinyle se porte plutôt bien comparé à celui du téléchargement légal... (Ce qui n'est pas surprenant finalement: pourquoi payer pour un truc qu'on peut avoir gratos? Alors que "l'objet" vinyle reste un témoignage visuel et sonore de qualité, parfois une "petite oeuvre d'art" et une sorte d'investissement car il existe un marché du vinyle qui peut se révéler assez lucratif... Peut-on imaginer revendre à prix d'or son téléchargement mp3 dans 30 ans alors que la technologie aura tellement évolué qu'il n'y aura plus aucun moyen de le lire. Avec le vinyle, il reste au moins "l'objet".

Le retour du vinyle est de plus en plus visible dans les magasins. Nous nous sommes fait la réflexion pas plus tard qu'hier avec Pascal... Tant à la FNAC que chez Gibert, non seulement le choix de vinyles est devenu de plus en plus important, mais les vinyles sont à nouveau remis en avant dans les têtes de rayon, ce qui ,perso, me ravit.

Bon, toujours aussi évasive sur ses projets.......
A mon avis on va attendre des lustres, pour changer....

Qu'est-ce que tu ne comprends pas? Qu'elle n'ait pas eu envie de refaire un album "dans la foulée" des 2 autres ou qu'"Aerial" et "50 WFS" se répondaient?

Elle n'a pas enregistré Aerial et 50 WFS en 2011 !

A heartfelt plea

Dear Kate,

I haven’t written a letter, the kind we used to write before we had computers and email, for a very long time indeed. With our myriad forms of communication in this age of information technology, it is a dying art. Just as we gave up using paintings on cave walls, or the sounds of hands pummelling animal skins stretched over wooden shells, putting ones thoughts, feelings and sentiments down in the form of a letter, directed to an individual recipient, is an increasingly rare thing to do. Why am I prefacing this document as such? Well, I simply want to reinforce the strength of feeling that has compelled me to reach out to you in this manner. Despite the fact that it is increasingly easy to contact the previously uncontactable, sometimes a simple, direct method is the most effective, probably because it stands out so much more in a world full of noise, discourse and crosstalk. However, the irony of this letter being published in an online magazine is not lost on me.

Firstly, I must thank you. I am sure I speak for anyone that has been moved or influenced by your work (although I would never claim to be their voice) when I say that your art has been incredibly important to me for many years. It has inspired and motivated me. Caused me to think, ponder and appreciate a great many things. I recall, as a young boy, hearing ‘Wuthering Heights’ and being bamboozled by the music, the voice and the lyrics. It embarrasses me to say that, as a boy of seven years old, I was one of the many kids of the day to think it more a novelty song, such was its stark contrast to everything else I’d been listening to. This was the beginning of the so called ‘post-punk’ era. We were rebellious youths and our songs and anthems were simple, noisy, brash and fun. My generation had never been properly exposed to intellect and intelligence in songs before. Prog Rock was the music of our older brothers (and occasionally, although rarely, sisters) with their long hair, long coats and long monologues on the works of Tolkein. Meanwhile, our parents mocked and moaned at the young girl in red, belittling the works of a great literary heroine. But, aside from your physical beauty, there was more that drew this young lad to your musings. Subsequent releases drew me further in, never completely, mind, as peer pressure forced me to appreciate you mostly in private. It seems so awful today, thinking that one’s masculinity and/or sexuality would be defined by the music you listened to. But that’s how it was. And until ‘Babooshka’, most blokes would dismiss you as nowt more than an artsy-fartsy, posh bird with a squeaky voice. And yet it was that music video that caused some of the most masculine of stirrings in my being at that point in my life! Your foray into the world of the Fairlight was devastatingly important to me as an aspiring musician and music technologist. You were at the forefront of something that still, to this day, informs a large part of my life.

And so when, in 2014, you announced your live shows to the world, I was one of the millions sat at their computer, utilising a technology that you so presciently described in ‘Deeper Understanding’, desperate to get tickets. For nearly 40 minutes, I failed at every attempt, constantly encountering ‘SOLD OUT’ notifications, coupled with an increasingly dark mood that grew darker as each minute passed and the slow realisation that I might never witness you sing live loomed large. And then, suddenly and without warning, two seats became available on opening night. I struggled to click the buy button because my brain was still trying to recover from its sullen mood, but I managed it and within minutes, I was the proud owner of two seats on August 26th 2014.

The following five months are still a bit of a blur. But when the day arrived, and I crossed the road out of The Broadway, under the flyover and approached the doors, your name writ large above, I truly felt that I was having MY Ziggy moment. This was going to be MY Lesser Free Trade Hall experience, MY Live Aid, MY ‘Dylan Goes Electric’ event. That is how important it felt, to be there, on opening night, surrounded by thousands of like-minded, lovely people. Camera’s were everywhere. The press were stopping all sorts of people and the outpouring of affection and anticipation was a quasi-religious experience.
And then, once we were in, and settled, the nervous excitement reached levels I have never experienced before at a live performance. The stage, lit purple, gave away nothing of what was to come. A simple band set up glistened in the violet glow. And then the lights dimmed, the opening prayer played, the band struck up ‘Lily’ and on you strode to a wave of 30 years pent up adulation.

But you know all of this, or at least most of it. You know the impact these shows had, both personally and culturally. And from the moment you walked off stage to this very moment, right here, right now, I yearn to relive that experience over and over again, in its entirety, both in sound and vision. Knowing that at least two shows had been filmed, I, and millions of others, felt safe in the knowledge that we would be able to revisit this glorious show again soon. We all thought that a Xmas release was almost inevitable, but when the festive season of 2014 came and went, we hoped for something the following year. Maybe there was to be some kind of indulgent, artistic presentation of the event in a way that only you might be able to do. But 2015 passed so quickly and there were no Kate-shaped presents under our trees. And yet, we never gave up hope, convinced that our great and mighty mistress was concocting a mesmerising delight of epic proportions, or even just a 2-disc Blu Ray. And finally, when pictures leaked in the summer of 2016, showing discs and cases, we finally felt our patience had paid off and we were soon to be able to immerse ourselves in your magic once more. But alas, these reports only made mention of an audio-only document. Nevertheless, we hoped, nay prayed, for something more.
And so here we are, and the album is out. It sounds as good as it did in the Hammy, without question, but it feels like I’ve been served a turf with no surf. My paella has no rice, my beer no hops, my Morecombe has no Wise. I listened intently to your interview on the radio, desperate to hear you say the words, “There will be a video release in the new year”, or some such. You used a lovely analogy of how you listened to Elton’s ’17-11-70’, eyes closed, recreating the event in your mind’s eye. But Kate, this was 1971. We didn’t have home video. We didn’t live in a multi-media society. Elton, bless him and all that sail in her, did not put on a three-act musical and theatrical extravaganza whose key moments were tied to the amazing set design, acting, lighting and surround sound you used to visualise ‘The Ninth Wave’ and ‘A Sky of Honey’. Anyone can close their eyes and think of 1970s Elton, prancing around the stage, or sat at his piano, knocking out ‘Take Me To The Pilot’ or ‘Burn Down The Mission’. We’ve seen footage of his performances, even though ’17-11-70’ was actually recorded live in New York’s A&R Recording Studios. With all due respect, no amount of closing my eyes will ever bring back to me the wondrous visual feast you laid on for us over those 22 remarkable evenings.
I am a huge supporter of restricting the use of personal mobile recording devices at live performances and was amazed at how well your request was observed throughout the run. However, I am left wishing that many had broken their promise because it seems like that might have been the only way we could relive these moments. I fully appreciate the effort of ‘being there’, of enjoying an art work at that specific moment in time, and I suppose I am exhibiting nothing more than a sense of entitlement inherent in our generation that has become so used to the commercialisation of art that not a second goes by where an artist, or moreover their label/sponsor/management, sees an opportunity to maximise profits by releasing a wealth of content, over and over again. Director’s Cut here (no pun intended), Super Deluxe Edition there, stretching out the marketable life of a ‘product’ far beyond its natural lifespan. I get that, I really do. And I appreciate it when an artist maintains a degree of integrity when it comes to protecting their work and not fleecing the fans with yet another regurgitated, repackaged, remastered, reprinted commodity.
But releasing nothing but an audio document of your supreme efforts seems to do both yourself and us fans a huge disservice. Sure, I love being able to tell people who couldn’t make the shows that I was there, on the very first night. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t revel in that. Just like someone who was at the very same venue 41 years previously, who witnessed the death of Ziggy, would be proud to announce their first hand experience of that rock and roll suicide. But even the late, great man himself put that show out for all to see and enjoy. Of course it didn’t have the same degree of theatricality, nor did he vanish into thin air afterwards, but a visual record exists of this rock and roll milestone, there for generations to witness and be moved and inspired by. I watched that movie again just the other day and it still blows me away, despite Pennebaker’s footage being wobbly and grainy. It captured the moment perfectly and will continue to blow people’s minds for decades to come.
I’ve discussed the glaring absence of a video of ‘Before The Dawn’ with many people. Some have posited that the filming went wrong, others that there was not enough decent footage to cobble together a complete show from both recordings. Some say it is because you’re incredibly self-conscious and don’t want to be immortalised in this way. I don’t have a personal opinion on any of that. All I have is what you told us on the radio a few weeks ago. That you believe that the audio, on its own, is far more representative. And trust me, the audio is indeed amazing. It ranks up there with some of the best live albums ever made, but there was so much more to ‘Before The Dawn’. I’m not at all fussed that I’ve not seen an accompanying video for Peter Frampton’s ‘Frampton Comes Alive’, The Who’s ‘Live At Leeds’ or John Meyer Trio’s ‘Try’, some of my favourite live albums ever. I don’t need a video to help me visualise a bunch of people on a stage, organised in the traditional band set-up, in my head. You’re absolutely right that albums like these are wondrous and representative of the musical art form. Even Peter Gabriel’s ‘Back To Front’ shows were captured and released in both audio-only and Blu Ray, and yes, I can listen to that album on its own and recall being there, in the O2, as I was, and still feel how great that concert was, without the need to refer to the video, although I often do watch it because it was a wonderful gig. I can tell you right now that if I could see your show again, from my singular viewpoint, high in the Circle, I’d pay handsomely for it. I appreciate the desire to not have cameras around and on the stage, but a simple static camera set up would capture the very thing that caused the minds of 5000 people across 22 nights to be blown. Two thirds of your show was the most amazing fusion of sound and vision ever. Please let us see it again, and let others behold it that could not be there. I don’t want a multi-angle, cinematic experience. I just want to see you and your incredible show the way I saw it on that balmy, British summer’s eve.
‘Before The Dawn’ was so much more than a regular music concert. It was a truly audiovisual experience of the utmost quality and brilliance, one that transcended the norm of a musical concert, and to deny millions of people the opportunity to, in some way, experience the utter magic you and your team created is a tragedy, be it reduced in impact from the live shows or not. I also appreciate your desire to move on to something new, and there are none more keen than I to hear what you come up with next, but I implore you to reconsider and hope that you may, one day very soon, renege on your decision to shelve the video indefinitely.
If this letter has caused you to pause and consider, albeit briefly, what might be possible to do, in order to bring your art to the people who will truly appreciate it, then my work here is done. I am under no illusion that a no-name, aspiring music hack like myself is unlikely to shift the decision of an artist with such commitment, integrity and passion. But I am also a firm believer in the maxim that if you don’t try, you won’t ever get.

Il faudrait que des gens "assez proches d'elle" osent lui dire ce genre de choses... par exemple Peter Gabriel ou Elton John, justement ?

Ah oui, j'avais pas fait gaffe... Bah, soit c'est le journaliste qui a voulu détailler et il s'est planté, soit il a mal traduit. Ca m'étonnerait en tous cas que KB elle-même se soit plantée... A moins qu'elle se soit mal exprimée... Bref, ça ne change rien à l'affaire.

J'ignorais que "Sounds" était ressorti... Un edito qui tombe à pic et qui exprime parfaitement ce que nous ressentons tous...

Uniquement en version numérique je crois.....

Plus j'écoute, ce que j'ai encore fait ce week-end, plus je regrette de ne pas avoir les images.
Je me rends compte que mes souvenirs me lâchent.
Il y a plusieurs moment où je ne revois plus vraiment ce qu'il se passaient sur scène.
C'est un peu flou.
C'est vraiment un sale coup qu'elle nous fait de ne pas sortir le DVD.
